KENTUCKY LAKE OUTDOOR ADVENTURES

Reconnect with Nature

Let’s face it.  Life can be quite stressful.  Work-life balance, taking care of your family and juggling the ever-increasing cost of living just piles on the pressure.

Here at Kentucky Lake, we are in the “de-stressing” business.  Away from big cities and urban settings, Kentucky Lake offers a literal breath of fresh air.

With so much water and shoreline, access to a plethora of outdoor activities, and some of the friendliest people around, Kentucky Lake will help you reconnect with nature.

So welcome to our website.  We’ve created this tool to help you take your next step to finding a place that your whole family will love – all without the hustle and bustle, noise, and crowds.

Recent online, radio, social, and digital marketing campaigns for the Kentucky Lake CVB have been paid in part by the Kentucky Department of Tourism. For more information on KDT, please click the logo.

Today’s tip: Moving Your Bait Naturally

I often see people doing too much with their lures. Reeling too fast. Giving big jerks. Most of these things limit your opportunities to get bit. With a fish like a crappie it’s about staying at their level and teasing. You don’t want a lot of erratic movement but I have found over the years if you can make a bait “flinch” you get a lot more bites.

A flinch is just a pulse or a stutter that the fish sees that makes him trigger. Game fish like crappie are natural predators, and when they see their prey shudder, it triggers an impulse. The trick with artificial jigs is to flutter but still look natural. Sometimes you are slowly raising the bait like the minnow is trying to sneak off. Sometimes you are just trying to look startled. So a tiny pulse, shake or even just a momentary pause in an otherwise steady retrieve tells the crappie, “he’s scared! Get ‘em!”

The other thing is once I know my bait is at their level, I turn back and focus on my rod tip. Screen watchers are bad about missing bites because they watch for a fish to move on their screen. The screen has a split second delay. As soon as I see a fish has seen my bait and is moving, I turn back to watch my rod tip and focus on my movements and seeing my line jump, rod tip load, slack line. All of these things can happen without any feel in the rod. So focus on your movement and your line once you get in their zone.
