Field to Fork: Squirrel Hunting at Camp Currie 🐿️🍽️
Recently, the Purchase Region hosted a Field to Fork Squirrel Hunting event at Camp Currie on Kentucky Lake, giving new hunters the chance to experience every step of the hunting process—from learning the basics to putting wild game on the table.
This program welcomed 10 first-time hunters from across Kentucky, along with two non-residents from Ohio and Tennessee. Together, participants successfully harvested 10 gray squirrels and 2 fox squirrels.
The event began Friday afternoon with firearm safety instruction and target shooting practice. Participants learned safe firearm handling and which firearms are appropriate for squirrel hunting before putting those lessons into practice on the range.
After the range session, hunters and mentors gathered for a wild game dinner featuring smoked venison roasts, fried fish, and white squirrel chili. The evening wrapped up with a Squirrel Hunting 101 program, covering squirrel biology, hunting strategies, and what to expect in the field.
Early Saturday morning, mentors led participants afield—many on their very first hunt. Following the hunt, everyone learned how to properly clean and process their harvested game, and each participant went home with meat to prepare and enjoy.
Field to Fork programs are designed to build confidence, skills, and connections to Kentucky’s hunting heritage by teaching new hunters everything they need to know to get started—and letting them experience it firsthand.
