I slid out for just few hours yesterday. I ran over to Barkley and fished some areas I normally fish and then explored new areas. Fishing was tough for me. I hadn’t been over there yet this year. And it took me quite awhile to see what a 30 degree swing in temps did to them. I will go on the tough days to learn new things. While some would say only catching 15 keepers stunk. I marked probably 2 dozen pieces of cover that will be really good in the next few months. I figured out where some fish were but could not fish effectively in that north wind with my casting techniques. But I marked it and noted it and caught a couple to verify the quality.

Be willing to explore more on those tough days. Thats how you end up with a pile of good places to fish. Go in an arm or a big pocket and get on a flat, get on a high spot and mark cover. Do it with 2D, do it with side scan. Do it with whatever you can. Maybe just troll or drag stuff around to find cover if you don’t have any electronics. There is always a way to find new stuff in new areas. But you have to be willing to give up fishing for the investment in searching. Thats tough when you can only get out there one day a week. But on days where the wind blows hard, I often just do a lot more looking than fishing to give me way more to work with on those good days. Lots of good days ahead. The lakes are fishing great already and we are not even to prime time yet.

I was cold yesterday and the creek I chose let me down, but I got a lot of good stuff marked for future great days! Having that mindset will lead you to a lot more consistently great fishing.
